The JBI Research and Education Program

As a Research Institute located within the Faculty of Health Sciences at the University of Adelaide, JBI has an active academic and research program and, as an international organisation focusing on promoting and facilitating evidence-based healthcare, the Institute engages in teaching evidence based healthcare and the science that underpins it; and in operational and evaluative research and consultancy/commissioned research.


Our Research and Consultancy Program

The Joanna Briggs Institute offers an independent consulting service dedicated to promoting better health outcomes through synthesising evidence; translating evidence into action; and developing an evidence based culture in health, aged and social care. The institute performs rigorous evidence reviews; delivers education and training in EBHC; and conducts evidence based assessments and evaluations of health, aged and social services and policies. Our worldwide clients include hospitals, health and aged care systems, government agencies, universities and other organisations. Our team has extensive experience in teaching, postgraduate research training and supervision, research, evaluation and consultancy and has staff with expertise in the science and practice of evidence synthesis, knowledge management, quality improvement and change management.

Our multidisciplinary research team includes staff with backgrounds in nursing, medicine, dentistry, biological science/biostatistics, allied health, psychology, sociology, organisational development, graphic design and technology with skills in the design and conduct of quantitative, qualitative and action research. The team manages an active portfolio of consultancies and an ongoing research program ranging from small local projects in hospitals, health services, clinics and community and care services to major, large scale national and international studies. Important links with relevant bodies across 42 countries are well established and enhance our capacity for coordinating international, multi-site research and maintaining awareness of international trends in healthcare research.

Our Consultancy Services

We welcome inquiries from health related groups in relation to:

  • Commissioned research and consultancies.  Our team is sensitive to the needs of health care related organisations, government and other client groups.
  • Our Three-year JBI Facilitation and Support Program for Health Service Sites. Evidence based practice is not yet well established at the point-of-care in most health systems and educating staff, establishing appropriate infrastructure and developing an ongoing implementation program within a health unit or health system often requires specialised assistance and ongoing facilitationand support. The Joanna Briggs Institute offers a Facilitation and Support Program for Health Service Sites spanning three years on a cost-recovery basis. Health Services Associates/Members of the Institute are eligible to contract us for this service at a subsidised rate as part of their membership package. The detailed structure and processes are tailored to the needs of the service, but generally focus on supporting the use of evidence in clinical decision-making at the point of care.   • Our Facilitation and Support Program for Universities, Colleges and other Educational Settings. The teaching of evidence based practice is not yet well established in many undergraduate and postgraduate schools of nursing, medicine or allied health. Educating staff, establishing appropriate infrastructure and developing an ongoing implementation program within a University, College or School often requires specialised assistance and ongoing facilitation and support. The Joanna Briggs Institute offers an on-site Facilitation and Support Program for Health Professional University Schools, Colleges or Schools spanning three year on a cost-recovery basis. Education Associates/Members of the Institute are eligible to contract us for this service at a subsidised rate as part of their Associate/ membership package. The detailed structure and processes are tailored to the needs of the School, but generally focus on supporting the use of evidence in curriculum development, courses, teaching strategies; and in the appropriate use of resources and tools and of assessment tasks. The Joanna Briggs Institute offers a wide range of continuing education and training programs for clinician managers, educators, academics and students from the fields of nursing, medicine, allied health, the health scences and information science. Our programs are practical and international in scope and reflect our expertise as a leading international research and development institute in the fields of evidence synthesis, transfer and utilisation.

Our Team

The Institute's experienced, enthusiastic multidisciplinary Research team is well qualified and highly motivated and includes staff with backgrounds in health science, public health, nursing, medicine, allied health, dentistry, epidemiology and biostatistics, quantitative research methods, qualitative research methods, evaluation research, systematic review processes (including meta-analysis and meta-synthesis), change management, organisational psychology and sociology.

Title Holders
Joanna Briggs Institute (JBI) Title Holders are able to access and connect to the wider University of Adelaide. 

Information about being a Title Holder
A Title with the University of Adelaide is a highly regarded position. These are appointed positions and applications can be made through the Institute. The process of appointing a Title Holder is rigorous. Once the application form is completed and handed into the Institute, a screening process commences. The Executive Director makes a recommendation to the Dean of the Faculty of Health Sciences and the University bestows the title on to successful applicants who meet the rigorous criteria.

What is a Title Holder of the University of Adelaide, Joanna Briggs Institute?
Title Holders (and Affiliate Title Holders) are an integral part of the Institute and play a central role in the programs offered by the Institute, in higher degree supervision, and in research.

Can anybody be a Title Holder?
No. The University following rigorous approval processes awards the Titles of Clinical, Affiliate, Adjunct, Visiting and Field with level sought as Professor, Associate Professor, Senior Lecturer, Lecturer, Associate Lecturer, Research Fellow and Fellow. 

What qualification do I need?
Those contributing to a program will need to have postgraduate qualification in the particular area of practice in which they teach and/or supervise.

As a Title Holder, can I use facilities of the University of Adelaide?
Yes. As a Title Holder you are afforded access to a range of privileges available to other members of the University - library membership, use of University facilities, membership of the University Club, and participation (by invitation) in curriculum review and planning.

What is my role as a Title Holder?
The role of a Title Holder within JBI relates to supporting the Institute in teaching, supervision and research.
